Family Storytime: Summer Time Snacks

For this storytime, I wanted to focus on all the yummy snacks we get to eat over the summer. Especially, with fourth of July coming up where we get to pig out on all these delicious treats.

Here’s what we did:

I usually start with many of the same warm ups:

  • Song – Top of the Morning
    • This is a good song to warm up with because we stretch all the parts we will be using in storytime. Eyes, arms, legs, mouth, nose.
  • ASL – Hello Friends
    • I like to use sign language in my story time. We go over the signs for: Hello, Friends, Time and Say. Thanks to Jbrary for this one!
  • Song – Hokey Pokey
    • Once we were warmed up we did a little hokey pokey to shake things up.

  • ASL – Food/Eat, More, Ice Cream, Summer
    • I like to teach my my kids a few American Sign Language signs at the start of every storytime. This helps foster communication and with a large deaf community in our town it’s a great tool to have.
  • Movement Rhyme –  Two Green Apples

Way up high in an apple tree

(Raise Arms High)

Two green apples smiled at me.

(Big Exaggerated Smiles)

So I shook that tree as hard as I could,

(Pretend to Shake tree)

And down fell the apples. Mmmm, they were good!

(Rub Tummy)

  • Story – The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle’41b16y3md8l
    • A colleague of mine has this one in lap theater format. I borrowed it for this storytime.
  • Song – We’re Going on a Picnic by Raffi
    • This is a fun little song to give my voice a little break. And picnics are fun!
  • Flannel / Movement Exercise – Ice Cream Scoop
    • The kids use their fists, one for the cone and one as the ice cream scoop and we count as we add ice cream to the cone. 20170624_155814

  • Story – The Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli 51chadzju3l-_ac_us218_I used my Alligator puppet to tell this story. He had a felt watermelon to eat and at the end he “spits” a seed (crumpled ball) into the audience.
  • Game – Stoplight freeze dance
    • I created red, yellow and green circles on popsicle sticks.
    • When I held up the green, they’d drive their cars. Yellow and they would drive in slow motion. Red and they would have to freeze in place.
    • I showed them in different orders and at different paces to make it more fun. A freeze dance for cars!
  • Movement Rhyme – Banana’s Unite
    • This is the silliest, cheerleader-esq, movement rhyme

Bananas unite (place arms over head) 
Bananas split (open arms and place at sides) 
Peel banana, peel, peel banana (move to left) 
Peel banana, peel, peel banana (move to the right) 
Bananas to the left (circle arms to the left) 
Bananas to the right (circle arms to the right) 
Peel it down the middle and (uh) take a bite (grab and pull from out in front of you) 

  • Story – Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems51lnloyjufl-_sx348_bo1204203200_
      • Ice cream is an iconic summer snack, so of course I had to include it. I also had cut outs of Elephant and Piggy from a display I did a while back, so I thought I could pin them up when I do this story.

     

  • Song w/ Shakers – Mr. Sun
    • We just shake our shakers and dance. By this point in storytime we just need to dance!

  • Movement Exercise – If You’re Happy and You Know It
    • I tell the kids that I want to know how happy they are.
  • ASL – Goodbye Friends
    • We learn to say goodbye in ASL and use the same signs and song as our hello.
  • Song – Goodbye, So Long, Farewell my Friends by Music Together
    • I always put this one on as I go to open the door. Its a nice, slow, peaceful song to wind down on.

How’d it go: This one went pretty well. A decent crowd with lots of little, little ones this time. Everyone put up with my use of the lap theater for The Very Hungry Caterpillar, which I feel like I need three hands for, and fun was had by all. We got a little fidgity toward then end and could have used another song. Other than that a good storytime.

Ice Cream Scoops – Flannel

Hi Guys,

For an upcoming storytime I am doing all things Summer Snacks! What better snack to cool off with on a hot day than ice cream!

I found a cute little rhyme from the Perry Public Library and decided it would make a really easy felt board.

First we need a cone, Nice and crunchy

Then we need some ice cream, Sweet and yummy,

Scoop ’em on; stack ’em on’ Up to the sky

We love ice cream; my, oh my!

First comes vanilla, Cold and sweet

Then comes chocolate A delicious treat.

20170624_155803This is also a rhyme you can have the kids do on their hands as you do it on the flannel board. Have them make a fist with one hand to use as their ice cream cone. The other hand is each scoop.

So I made my cone and each of my scoops. This is such an easy one to make! It took me maybe five minutes and now I have an ice cream flannel that I can use again and again.

Family Storytime: Building

For this storytime I figured we’d try to keep in line with our Summer Reading theme of Build a Better World and focus on all things building and construction.

Here’s what we did:

I always start with just about the same warm ups:

  • Song – Top of the Morning
    • This is a good song to warm up with because we stretch all the parts we will be using in storytime. Eyes, arms, legs, mouth, nose.
  • Rhyme – Say Hello
    • love this rhyme. Everyone claps along and at the end we say hello how ever I tell them to. Loud, soft, quick, slow.
  • Song – Tap Your Toes and Follow Me by Susan Salidor
    • This is just a easy song with simple movements to get us warmed up.
  • Movement Exercise – Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
    • Now that we are warmed up we get moving with this classic. Do it three times faster and faster each time.

From here we get into our theme.

  • ASL – Summer. Read. Build.
    • I like to teach my my kids a few American Sign Language signs at the start of every storytime. This helps foster communication and with a large deaf community in our town it’s a great tool to have.

    • We pretended we moved like cranes; reaching up high and low and all around. You can find the words at: Jen in the library.
  • Story – Rex Wrecks It! By Ben Clanton
    • Kids can always relate to building things and then knocking them down. I love this one because you know what’s coming and so do the kids.
  • Song -Shake my Sillies Out
    • By this time we were ready to get our wiggles out so I played this classic and we shook out all the sillies.
  • Rhyme w/ Prop – Five Little Nails
    • I made my own version from Mel’s Desk. This was such an easy and awesome prop!

  • Flannel Board – Construction Countdown by K.C. Olson
    • I actually created my own flannel board using the vehicles listed in the book. We counted 10 dump trucks, 9 cement mixers, etc. Counting is popular with this crew.
  • Game – Sleeping sleeping sleeping all the children were sleeping
    • This is a game my mom uses when she nannies. Basically, you put the kids to sleep:
      • Sleeping, sleeping all my friends were sleeping. And when they woke up they were… (name an animal to act out).
    • Don’t forget to turn them back to good boys and girls at the end!
  • Story – Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey 61tbwcfq1wl-_sy487_bo1204203200_Rinkey and Tom Lichtenheld
    • This is a longer one then I normally do but I cut down on how many vehicles we say goodnight to.
  • Movement w/ Scarves – Toss Your Scarves
    • Simple rhyme and lets us use our scarves more than once.
  • Song w/ Scarves – Let’s Go Fly A Kite (yes the Mary Poppins song 🙂
    • I pass out scarves and we pretend they are kites while we sing along.

Finally, I always end with the same three things:

  • Movement Exercise – If You’re Happy and You Know It
    • I tell the kids that I want to know how happy they are.
  • Rhyme – Say Goodbye
    • This is the same rhyme we started with, so the new guys are familiar with it by the end of storytime.

    • I always put this one on as I go to open the door. Its a nice, slow, peaceful song to wind down on.

How’d it go: This one started off really great. We got a little fussy toward the end so I barely read any of Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site and pretty much went straight to the scarf song. With a big crew like this it is good to have lots of songs and movements ready just in case we can’t sit still.

  • Story w/ Props – It’s My Birthday by Helen Oxenbury
    • My colleague had this one all ready for me. She had all the ingredients, a paper oven and I pulled all of my puppet friends to help me bake the cake.
  • Song – Happy Birthday
    • This is a great dancing birthday song. My colleague gave it to me from a CD of hers but I have no idea what it actually is. It goes something like “Happy Birthday, hap happy birthday. It’s your birthday…”
  • Movement Exercise – Make a Wish

Dish of ice cream (Make a cup out of your hands)

Ten candles (Wiggle your fingers)

Make a wish and blow them out! (Blow on each of your hands and make a fist to show the candles are out)

  • Flannel Board – Ten Little CandlesI used candles we already had made and got the words from here. I used the flannel instead of my fingers but it would have worked just as well.
  • Song -Shake my Sillies Out
    • By this time we were ready to get our wiggles out so I played this classic and we shook out all the sillies.
  • Story w/ Magnets – Wibbly Pig Opens His Presents by Inkpen
    • Another one from my colleague. She had magnets of all the presents ready and laminated wrapping paper to put over them. It was like a big reveal. I even used a “Wibbly” pig puppet.
  • Song w/ Shakers – Can’t Stop the Feeling! Trolls Soundtrack I passed out shakers and we danced our fanny’s off to this song. Not a normal storytime song BUT we loved it and so did the adults.81acafb99pl-_sx425_

How’d it go: Now that we are reaching our summer months, we have to do our storytimes in a little bit smaller of a room. So we can get a little crowded with our 75-100+ people. I was totally prepared to put up a “we’re full” sign but fortunately, our crowd was about the top of what I could handle in this room.

Overall, it went really well. Everyone wished me a happy birthday and I even successfully used my puppets, which can be dicey depending on the day. I was super thankful to have my colleagues help with getting this one ready. We’ve been busy scheduling and doing summer reading visits that I kind of had to throw this one together at the last moment. But teamwork prevailed and we made it through!

Time For Two’s: Transportation

Hi Guys,

For this storytime I pretty much recycled the transportation family storytime I did back in October, so this post may seem familiar.

I started out with:

  • Song – Top of the Morning

  • Rhyme – Say Hello
    • love this rhyme. Everyone claps along and at the end we say hello how ever I tell them to. Loud, soft, quick, slow.
  • Movement Exercise – Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes

  • ASL Rhyme – I taught the group the ASL signs for Red, Yellow & Green. For the rest of the storytime anytime we used these colors the kids did the signs.
  • Story – I’m Dirty by Kate & Jim McMullanYou have to be really expressive with this one in order to make it fun. Shorten if you have to but throw a little swagger in when you read it.
  • Song – The Wheels on the Bus
    • Just a classic movement song.
  • Feltboard – Cars & Colors 20160917_154101
    • Basically, I just told the kids that “There are lots of cars driving down the street. What color do you see? Beep, Beep, Beep.” For the colors we knew signs for we did them while shouting out the colors. We also practiced our counting by counting out the cars as we went.

    • I created a pigeon puppet and instead reading the 51bi6f3mrll-_sx496_bo1204203200_story, I told the kids that no matter how much the pigeon begged, they couldn’t let him drive the bus. So I was the pigeon and the kids kept telling me no every time I asked. It was really fun.
  • Movement Rhyme – Zoom, Zoom, Zoom

    We’re going to the moon.

    Zoom, zoom, zoom

    We’re going to the moon.

    If you want to take a trip

    • Always a risk, but I passed out shakers and we shook our fanny’s off to the song.

How’d it go:

One of our other branches recently closed for a refresh so I wasn’t sure how many people to expect in this one, but it wasn’t that bad. We had a good crew and for the most part all two year olds, which is unheard of! Lots of participation, which makes storytime so much more fun. Overall, this was a good group of twos.

Time for Two’s: Camping

Time for Two’s can be a rambunctious storytime. I was prepared this time with lots and lots of wiggle songs!

Here’s what we did:

Then I get into my theme. This time we did all things camping!

  • Story – We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Micheal Rosen
    • This one is great for repetition. The kids almost know the words before you reach the end. You can throw in some movements too, which helps because it is a little long.

    • We love to sing around the campfire right? First we practiced the words using a flip chart and then I put on the song for us to dance to.
  • Flannel – Five Little KernelsThis is just a simple flannel that you can work on counting with. It is also fun to go POP! and pop goes the kernel.
  • Rhyme – Twinkle Twinkle Little Star
    • This is a classic. I asked the kids if they ever look up at the stars when they go camping and then we do you simple movements to the rhyme. Repeat twice.
  • Song – The Ants Go Marching
    • I used Freegal to download a decently paced version of this song. We only let it play to 5 ants marching.
  • Story – Scare a Bear by Kathy-jo Wargin51tkyenhdcl-_sx487_bo1204203200_
    • Our library didn’t have a copy of this one so I had to get it from ILL. But it was a great one because the rhyme was fun and at the end I pulled out my bear puppet and all the kids got a chance to scare him!

    • We just shake our shakers and dance. By this point in storytime we just need to dance!

How’d it go:

Overall, things went pretty well this time. We did just enough to keep us happy and not too much to get all fidgety. I was glad I had all my songs prepared because this is a loud group, so anytime I don’t have to sing/shout over the kids, I’m happy. I do need to find another version of Do your hears hang low; the song was a little too fast for us, so we mostly just swayed to the music.

Family Storytime: Numbers

For this family storytime we focused on all things numbers!

Here’s what we did:

    • I like to include a few new ASL signs in storytime. I usually print my own flash cards from Baby Sign Language. This time I taught the kids how to sign the numbers 1 through 10. And quite a few adults and kids tried to do the signs throughout storytime!

    • I couldn’t resist sneaking this little numbers joke in. The parents laughed and I laughed at myself.
  • Story – Pete the Cat and his Four Groovy Buttons by Eric Litwin61ofo4wiwnl-_sx387_bo1204203200_
    • This was such a good story! You can work on number identification, counting, subtracting and colors. It also has such a good moral: “Buttons come and buttons go. But do we cry? Goodness no!”
    • I am totally making a Pete the Cat puppet next time!
  • Song – The Ants Go Marching
    • I used Freegal to download a decently paced version of this song. We only let it play to 5 ants marching.
  • Flannel Board – Woosh Went the Wind
    • This was a flannel I made a while ago. Basically, the dandelions get blown away one by one.
  • Game – All the Children Were Sleeping61gm5ygvsvl-_sy404_bo1204203200_1
    • This is a game my mom taught me (she’s a nanny). You go “sleeping, sleeping all the children were sleeping. And when they woke up, they were ____.” Lions, tigers, bears. You get the kids to act out different movements and sounds. It’s a big hit for my kids. Remember to turn them back to boys and girls at the end.
  • Movement Exercise – 10 Little Bubbles
    • We do this one to the tune of “Ten Little Indians.” The kids all help me “pop” the bubbles at the end by clapping their hands.
  • Story w/ Flannel – Turtle Splash! by Catheryn Falwell20170318_172340
    • So for this one I created a flannel of the turtles on the log and then I got my puppets out to represent the different animals who scare the turtles away.
    • During storytime, I passed out my puppets to the kids and they had to run up to the flannel board and scare my turtles away.
  • Song w/ Shakers – Mr. Sun
    • Always a risk, but I passed out shakers and we shook our fanny’s off to the song.

How’d it go: This storytime started out really great but got a little boisterous once we got to Turtle Splash!. I think this group was just a little too big to pass out puppets. Once the puppets were out there, there was no getting them back and no focusing. It was worth a try but I think I’d only ask for volunteers in a smaller storytime, going forward. Other than that, not bad.
