9/12/16 – LapSit Storytime

Hi Guys,

The second Monday of every month I do our library’s LapSit storytime. LapSit is for babies up to 11 month and I will admit, it is my favorite age group. The babies love the bounces and the parents really have to get involved, which is great!

Here’s a list of what we did:

  • Rhyme – Welcome, Welcome Everyone
    • This is to the tune of twinkle, twinkle little star and it is my way to welcome my crew to storytime.

      Welcome, welcome everyone

Now you’re here, we’ll have some fun!

First we’ll clap our hands just so,

Then we’ll bend and touch our toes.

      Welcome, welcome everyone

Now you’re here, we’ll have some fun!

  • ASL – Hello Friends
    • I like to use sign language in my story time. We go over the signs for: Hello, Friends, Time and Say. Thanks to Jbrary for this one!
  • Movement Exercise – Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes
    • I like to get warmed up with this classic.
  • Song – Tap Your Toes and Follow Me by Susan Salidor
    • This just has a great beat and practices identifying different movements with the babies.
  • Movement Exercise – Open, Shut Them
    • Another classic. We are working on our motor skills here.

Open shut them
Open shut them
Give a little clap, clap, clap

Open shut them
Open shut them
Lay them on your lap, lap, lap

Creep them creep them
Creep them creep them
Right up to your chin, chin, chin
Open wide your little mouth
But do not let them in

  • 51v4sf5ayrl-_sx443_bo1204203200_Story – Overboard! by Sarah Weeks
    • This one was so successful! Everytime I said OVERBOARD, the grownups would dip their babies. We had so many giggles by the end!
  • Bounce – This is the way the lady rides
    • This is one of my most popular bounces. We get faster and faster with each verse.

This is the way the lady rides

Lady ride, lady rides.

This the way on her way to town.

Repeat with Gentleman, Doctor and Cowboy.

  • Tickle/Bounce – Zoom, Zoom, Zoom
    • Another bounce and tickle rhyme to make the babies giggle.
  • Bounce – Going Up and Down in an Elevator
    • Obviously we like our bounces. Baby goes up and down as you do the rhyme.

Going up and down in an elevator

Up and down in an elevator

Up and down in an elevator

First floor, second floor, third floor, Yay!

  • 51fjtbgzaul-_sy248_bo1204203200_Story – Trains Go! by Steve Light
    • This is good one to practice phonetic awareness. There are lots of great sounds you and baby can practice.
  • Song w/ Shakers – Mr. Sun
    • I play any version of the song Mr. Sun and we use shakers and sing along.
  • Story – The Wonderful Things You Will Be by Emily Winfield Martin
    • This was a spur of the moment addition. We just got in this and it was to perfect not to read. A book about acceptance and telling your baby that you will love them no matter what they will grow up to be. 51zoff2bj4bl-_sx473_bo1204203200_
  • ASL – Goodbye Friends
    • We learn to say goodbye in ASL and use the same signs and song as our hello.
  • Song – Goodbye, So long, Farewell My Friends by Music Together
    • Just a slow, goodbye song I always put on as I open the doors to say goodbye.

How’d it go? We had a great LapSit storytime yesterday. The books were a hit, especially Overboard. We also had lots of giggles and hardly any tears. All in all a good time!

That’s all for now!

Oh and a quick pic of my (not-so-little) helper!
